peta2: 5 Questions With Hostage Calm

Just when I thought I couldn’t love this band any more, I find out they’re all vegetarian/vegan.
This interview, particularly questions 1 and 3 nearly made me well up, its bang on how I feel about vegetarianism. It was at a punk gig where I had that lightbulmb moment. I learned about the environmental issues with eating meat and that was just yet another reason not to do it.

Today’s 5 Questions blog comes from Connecticut based punk band Hostage Calm. Part of the Run For Cover Records family, Hostage Calm draws comparison to The Clash and Punchline, with inklings of early Saves the Day thrown in the mix. Heartfelt and infectious, Hostage Calm is quickly making a name for themselves in today’s reawakened pop punk scene. Check out our interview with vocalist Chris Martin, and enter the contest below for your chance to win Hostage Calm CDs and merch!

1. What prompted you to become vegetarian/vegan? Were there any bands, books, etc. that influenced your opinions on animal rights?

Growing up in the punk rock and hardcore scenes, I was definitely exposed to it a lot. Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, The First Step, With Honor—these bands got me thinking about what I ate and why the implications of my diet mattered. I had a lot of friends who were vegetarian and vegan, and there was always literature at shows. I had also started to learn about the environmental consequences of meat production as I delved into the issue of climate change. All these things started to add up for me. Our bass player Tim and I hung out on the fourth of July about six years ago, and we made a pact that day that we would stop eating meat, and we never looked back. I’ve been vegetarian ever since. He’s vegan now. All of Hostage Calm is vegan/vegetarian. I think all of us learned about it through punk music.

2. What are some of your favorite vegan foods? Any awesome hometown restaurants we should know about?

I love any vegan pizza with Daiya vegan cheese. Nice Slice in Providence, RI is great. The Rebellion in Denver, CO is another good one. As for hometown restaurants here in Baltimore, I really like to eat at One World Café or the Yabba Pot.

3. Of all the major animal rights issues are there any issues that are particularly close to your heart?

The environmental effects of meat production, definitely. The way this industry operates affects every living thing on our planet. It wastes so much life and so much energy, and has such dire implications for our future on earth. The Methane and N2O (Nitrous Oxide) that come from the raising of animals for food are two of the biggest contributors to climate change. We are wasting so much on something so unnecessary and brutal. We kill primarily just to feed and fatten the animals we want to later kill for consumption. It’s distorting our natural equilibrium here on Earth, be it in our climate or our ecosystems.

4. If a fan were to approach you with questions about how to get involved with animal rights, what advice would you give him or her?

The first thing I would say is that you should think about your diet and how to use it to improve animal welfare. You can have such a tremendous impact on the animal kingdom just through making minor changes in what they eat, and teaching their families and friends about vegetarianism/veganism. Be the change you want to see, and lead by example. Secondly, I would say to pay attention to those around you and what they have done. Try to learn from them. Use your knowledge and your talents to help educate those around you. For instance, if you’re a good cook or baker, you could make vegan foods and serve them at parties where people aren’t vegan. I think that using a talent like that to expose people to this lifestyle is a perfect way to get started.

5. What does Hostage Calm have coming up that we can be looking forward to?

Hostage Calm will be touring the UK and Europe for all of March, and will announce a ton more U.S. dates very soon. We will be on tour internationally for the rest of 2011, with various singles and compilation tracks that we’ll release along the way. Record Store Day is soon - everyone should check it out and pick something up. We need record stores to exist.

Damian Abraham (Fucked Up) summed it up quite nicely on Twitter earlier,“It’s unfortunate that a Record Store Day is necessary. That being said, I am glad we have it.” View high resolution

The King Blues Punk & Poetry Tour 2011

One word… Epic!
Last night me and the team wrapped up the filming of The King Blues tour, at a homecoming gig in London’s Camden Koko’s. What a night!
After a few intimate and sweaty gigs at the likes of the Bristol Bierkeller, and Tunbridge Wells Forum, the tour closed at Koko’s infront of 2,000 nuts King Blues fans! The guys absolutely smaaashed it!
The best footage from the tour was captured last night due to how incredible the venue was! The edit will start on Monday, and within a week or two, you will get to see the full edit from the tour. Thanks to all of the people involved in making this tour video happen. Plenty of exciting stuff in the pipeline, including a live shoot for The Subways this Tuesday and a music video shoot on Thursday for Under The Influence. One more huge project to blog about concerning a huge summer festival, which I will blogging about later this week!
Thanks guys, keep an eye out for teasers and stills over the next week!
Matt.

I cannot put into words how much we love The King Blues. I cried a least three times at their recent Tuts show (in my defence, my best friend/the white stripe is moving to London soon and as it turns out, that makes the lyrics to Under The Fog somewhat poingnant ).ANYWAY. I’m really, really excited to see what Matt Fleming has done throughout this tour (even if he did miss out on Glasgow’s DEEP EMOTION), I have no doubt that it’ll be anything short of magnificent. Keep an eye out!    View high resolution

Save Your Breath’s debut record ‘Vices’ is now available for pre-order from their website. Click on their pretty faces to be taken to their merch store, which where you can not only pre order the album, but also buy awesome tshirts and the like. Three of which I’m currently trying to choose between. (the jumper, baseball and DMC tee, if anyone’s feeling generous)If their show at King Tuts (supporting Make Do And Mend and Fireworks) was anything to go by, it’s going to be very very good. I could go on for days saying good things about these guys, but instead of doing something creepy like that, I’ll just list the places where you can find out for yourself how awesome they are. WEBSITE | TUMBLR | TWITTER | FACEBOOK View high resolution

So we haven’t really updated on here in a while, but thought we should share some of our latest news with you all.

We are happy to announce that we have finally confirmed our first gig, which will be at Nice n’ Sleazies, Glasgow, on the 23rd June.

At the moment we are talking to other bands about playing with us, and should have a full line-up shortly.

Our new 3 track E.P will also be finished and on sale hopefully by the end of April / start of May, as a download and also as a physical package. We should have a preview of the art work soon and we will be uploading it here on our blog.

We hope you like the new tracks and we hope you can all come out to the show!

This is exciting news, follow these guys!

Fireworks are absolutely my favourite band at the moment. I used up all of my free streaming minutes on Spotify listening to ‘All I Have To Offer Is My Own Confusion’. I just… I can’t put into words how happy they make me. It’s ridiculous.

If you don’t listen to them already, they’re a pop punk band from Detroit, on the amazing Run For Cover records.

I urge you to watch that video. If you watch it, and you have no interest in hearing more, then that’s fine. That’s acceptable.
You totally will though, and your life will forever be that little bit happier as a result.

Rock Sound are giving away a Make Do And Mend CD. FOR FREE.

This might be old news, but I wasn’t aware of it and just saw it in the shop. The CD features

  1. Unknowingly Strong
  2. Ghostal
  3. Transparent Seas
  4. Keep This
  5. Nights The Only Time Of Day

Plus two songs from Dave Hause’s ‘Resolutions’

  1. Melanin
  2. Resolutions

There’s also ANOTHER free CD, your general Rock Sound compilation with songs from The King Blues, Protest The Hero and The Blackout. I’m flicking through just now and there’s also a Rise Against article, and a Make Do And Mend article. Definitely getting your money’s worth this month.
